Biography
Born in Nantes,
France, in 1959, Gilles Bruni follows agricultural studies in the
middle of the 70s, then experiments painting before starting again
studies at the university of Rennes 2 in 1986. He
obtains a doctorate of Visual arts in 1997. In
parallel he abandons its personal practice for a common field of
experimentation with Marc Babarit, in the open air, under name
"Landscape Installation". This collaboration B/B
(Bruni/Babarit - Babarit/Bruni) begins in 1987 and finishes in 2005.
Gilles Bruni with or without Marc
Babarit conducted its field activities in France like abroad
(Germany, the USA, Canada, Denmark, Italy, Austria, Venezuela),
mainly for residences and orders.
Apart from this singular collaboration,
Gilles Bruni continues this contextual work, crossing its
questionnement around the landscape with that of the ecology of the
place, his inhabitants and their history, privileging collaborations
and partnerships. In its creations he tries to integrate
publications into its practice of the site and photography.
*
Artistic step
Gilles Bruni focus his practice and his reflexion in several directions
from an ecology of the landscape today. They carry him towards areas in
waitings or without particular uses, from vacant lots (waste ground,
grey areas), these areas able to be an intra or lost-urban, as some
years ago for Stuwa in the Village of Bisel in Alsace (East of France,
2016).
It defends the position of a job in the crossroad of artistic practices
and in forms that can raise gardening, agriculture, architecture or
sculpture, crossing field activities, as in the Estate of Chamarande
where two perennial and evolutionary artwork come from a collaboratif
job with the naturalist and the gardeners (‘’Balance’’, on 2011 and
‘’Le pourrissoir’’, Essonnes, France, 2013). They involve other
disciplines on occasion, ecology, sociology, history... Indeed, this
job becomes more empirical, in the order of experience, readily in link
with populations among which the artist works, as on the City of the
Electricians with ‘’Campement’’ (2012-13) in Bruay-la-Buissière
(Pas-de-Calais, North of France). Not everything is defined in advance.
The meeting with inhabitants is always for him a stake, it is reflected
in the course of his work. Reports to others transform him, move it
forward so much on intellectual plan which practice. Gilles Bruni
constructs with people, it has an impact on produced forms, on the
largeness of plans. ‘’Le camp de l’Ermitage’’ in Gorre (North of
France), or ‘’Balance’’ in Chamarande do not have existence without the
involvement of numerous partners, the work becomes additional and is
enriched by the know-how of others.
The long time often remains what seems to it the best adapting in its
question settings and its plans: need to be present, available, to find
how to draw part of places and to work with people. If this time is
partly social, it indeed includes a climatic and seasonal time which
regulates the life of circles and conditions bets in writings. Gilles
Bruni does not cut off from his environment, he drinks it. In return,
this time informs plans for which it often uses the vegetable and the
cycles of the living being as dynamic trial, a means to work on the
question of time. This equipment indeed reintroduces something that
avoids our will of workmanship, it takes it as an otherness (of the
non-human being) with whom it is very often a question of compromising
and of being in forms of correlation (‘’Circum-lacustre’’ and the
performance of meeting with ‘’La grande bloute’’, West of France,
2017). Sculptural mode, the architecture or ranked is finally only the
realisation of a process. Where from necessity for him to develop a
methodology of pre-plan, favouring residences, as with the association
l’Esprit du lieu around the lake of Grand-Lieu (West of France,
2016-17), or more recently in the Hestercombe Estate in Somerset (UK,
2018).
